Cristero War

1926–1929 · 20th century

The Cristero War (1926–1929) was an armed uprising in central and western Mexico against the anticlerical laws of President Plutarco Elías Calles. Catholic rebels, the Cristeros, fought federal troops chiefly in Jalisco, Michoacán and neighbouring states, and tens of thousands died. It ended with an agreement between the government and the Church brokered by the United States ambassador Dwight Morrow.
