Leopoldo Batres

1852–1926 · 20th century

Leopoldo Batres was a Mexican archaeologist who served as inspector of archaeological monuments under Porfirio Díaz. He led the first large-scale excavation and reconstruction of the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan, completed for the centenary of Mexican independence in 1910. His methods, which removed much of the pyramid's outer layer, were later strongly criticised.
