Porfirio Díaz

1830–1915 · 19th century

Porfirio Díaz was a Mexican general, hero of the war against the French intervention, who seized power in 1876 and ruled almost continuously until 1911. The period, called the Porfiriato, brought railways, mines and foreign investment but also great concentration of land and repression. His fraudulent re-election in 1910 sparked the Mexican Revolution, and he died in exile in Paris.
