1895–1970 · 20th century · Also known as Lázaro Cárdenas del Río

Lázaro Cárdenas was president of Mexico from 1934 to 1940. A general of the Revolution, he carried out the largest land reform in Mexican history, distributing millions of hectares as ejidos, and supported organised labour. In 1938 he expropriated the foreign-owned oil industry and created Pemex. He also reorganised the ruling party into the forerunner of the PRI and gave refuge to Spanish Republicans.
