Pemex

1938 · 20th century · Also known as Petróleos Mexicanos

Pemex (Petróleos Mexicanos) is Mexico's state oil company, created in 1938 after President Lázaro Cárdenas expropriated the foreign oil companies. It held a monopoly over oil production for most of its history, and its revenues long financed a large share of the federal budget. Discoveries such as the Cantarell field made it one of the world's largest oil producers.
