Pemmican War

1812–1821 · 19th century

The Pemmican War was a conflict between the North West Company and the Hudson's Bay Company's Red River Colony in present-day Manitoba. It began when the colony's governor banned the export of pemmican, the Métis and fur traders' staple food, in 1814. The violence peaked at Seven Oaks in 1816, when twenty-one colonists were killed, and ended with the merger of the two companies in 1821.
