North West Company

1779–1821 · 18th century

The North West Company was a fur-trading partnership based in Montreal that competed fiercely with the Hudson's Bay Company across western Canada. Its traders and Métis allies pushed far inland and opposed the Red River Colony, a conflict that led to the Battle of Seven Oaks in 1816. It merged with the Hudson's Bay Company in 1821.
