Montreal
Montreal is the largest city of Quebec, Canada, on an island in the St Lawrence River. Founded as Ville-Marie in 1642 by French Catholic settlers, it became the centre of the New France fur trade and surrendered to the British in 1760. Briefly capital of the Province of Canada in the 1840s, it was the economic capital of Canada for much of its history and remains a major French-speaking city.
