Battle of Seven Oaks

1816 · 19th century · Part of the Pemmican War

The Battle of Seven Oaks was a clash on 19 June 1816 near the Red River Colony, in present-day Winnipeg, Canada. Métis led by Cuthbert Grant, allied with the North West Company, killed Governor Robert Semple and about twenty men of the Hudson's Bay Company's colony, losing one of their own. It was the bloodiest episode of the Pemmican War and is remembered as a founding moment of Métis national identity.
