Louis Riel

1844–1885 · 19th century

Louis Riel was a Métis leader of the Red River settlement. When the Hudson's Bay Company's Rupert's Land passed to Canada in 1869 without consulting its people, he formed a provisional government whose negotiations led to the creation of the province of Manitoba in 1870. Exiled, he returned in 1884 to lead the North-West Rebellion in Saskatchewan, and after its defeat he was tried for treason and hanged in 1885.
