Battle of the Atlantic

1939–1945 · 20th century · Part of the Second World War

The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous campaign of the Second World War, fought between Allied navies and air forces and German U-boats and surface raiders over the convoy routes from North America to Britain. The Royal Canadian Navy grew into one of the largest Allied navies in the struggle. Allied victory, clear by mid-1943, made the invasion of western Europe possible.
