U-boat
U-boat is the English name for German military submarines, from the German Unterseeboot. In both world wars U-boats waged campaigns against Allied merchant shipping that threatened Britain's supply lines, in 1917 and again in the Battle of the Atlantic of 1939–1945. Many were built at yards in Hamburg, Bremen and Kiel.
