Louis Philippe I

1773–1850 · 19th century · Also known as Louis-Philippe of Orléans, Louis Philippe, Duke of Orléans, Louis-Philippe

Louis Philippe I was King of the French from 1830 to 1848. Head of the Orléans branch of the Bourbons and son of a prince who had backed the Revolution, he was placed on the throne after the July Revolution of 1830 as a constitutional 'citizen king'. His July Monarchy favoured the wealthy middle class, and he was overthrown in the Revolution of 1848 and died in exile in England.
