François Guizot

1787–1874 · 19th century

François Guizot was a French historian and liberal politician who dominated the government of the July Monarchy in the 1840s, first as foreign minister and then as prime minister. As education minister his law of 1833 required every commune to keep a primary school. His refusal to widen the narrow electorate helped bring the revolution of February 1848 and the king's fall.
