Porkkala
Porkkala is a peninsula on the Gulf of Finland about 30 kilometres west of Helsinki. Under the armistice of September 1944 Finland had to lease it to the Soviet Union for fifty years as a naval base, an arrangement that placed Soviet artillery within range of the capital. The Soviet Union returned the area early, in January 1956, a step that strengthened Finland's policy of neutrality.
