National Revolutionary Party

1929–1938 · 20th century

The National Revolutionary Party was the Mexican ruling party founded in 1929 by Plutarco Elías Calles after the assassination of Álvaro Obregón. It united revolutionary generals and regional political machines in one organisation so that the presidential succession could be settled peacefully. Lázaro Cárdenas reorganised it in 1938 as the Party of the Mexican Revolution, which became the Institutional Revolutionary Party in 1946.
