National Salvation Front (Romania)

1989–1992 · 20th century

The National Salvation Front was the body that took power in Romania during the revolution of December 1989, after the fall of Nicolae Ceaușescu. Led by Ion Iliescu and dominated by former communists, it turned itself into a political party and won the elections of May 1990 by a wide margin, but its use of miners against protesters in Bucharest in June 1990 drew criticism. It split in 1992.
