Timișoara
Timișoara, in Hungarian Temesvár and German Temeswar, is the largest city of the Banat in western Romania. A medieval Hungarian fortress, it was held by the Ottomans from 1552 until Prince Eugene of Savoy took it in 1716, after which it was rebuilt as the baroque capital of the Habsburg Banat of Temeswar. In December 1989 protests in the city sparked the Romanian Revolution that overthrew Nicolae Ceaușescu.
