Banat Republic
Origins
As Austria-Hungary dissolved at the end of October 1918, Social Democrats and local leaders in Temesvár, led by the lawyer Otto Roth, proclaimed the Banat Republic on 1 November 1918. They hoped to preserve the unity of the Banat, home to Romanians, Serbs, Germans, Hungarians and others, within a democratic Hungary.
Rule and society
A people's council with representatives of the different nationalities tried to keep order, organise a civic guard and supply the towns. The republic had little military force and was not recognised by any state; Romanian and Serbian national councils in the region rejected it.
Decline and legacy
Serbian troops entered Temesvár on 15 November 1918 and ended the republic within about two weeks of its proclamation. The Banat was later divided between Romania, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and Hungary by the post-war treaties of 1919 to 1920.
