National Resistance Army

1981–1995 · 20th century

The National Resistance Army was the armed wing of Yoweri Museveni's National Resistance Movement, which waged a guerrilla war, the Bush War, against the governments of Milton Obote and Tito Okello from 1981. Growing from a small band of fighters, it took Kampala in January 1986 and brought Museveni to power. It then became Uganda's national army and was renamed the Uganda People's Defence Force in 1995.
