b. 1957 · 20th century

Paul Kagame is a Rwandan soldier and politician who commanded the Rwandan Patriotic Front forces that ended the genocide against the Tutsi in 1994. He was vice-president and defence minister before becoming president in 2000. His government is credited with economic recovery and reconstruction, while critics point to restrictions on opposition and the press and to Rwanda's role in wars in the Congo.
