Northern Frontier District
The Northern Frontier District was a vast, arid region of northern Kenya under British rule, inhabited largely by Somali and Oromo pastoralists. A British commission found in 1962 that most of its Somali population wished to join Somalia, but the territory stayed with Kenya at independence in 1963. Somali secessionists, backed by Somalia, then fought the Shifta War of 1963–1967 against the Kenyan government.
