Somali Republic

1960 CE – 1969 CE · capital Mogadishu

The first independent Somali state, formed by uniting the former British and Italian territories in 1960, and a parliamentary democracy until 1969.

Origins

On 1 July 1960 the State of Somaliland, independent for five days, united with the Trust Territory of Somaliland to form the Somali Republic, with Mogadishu as capital. Aden Abdullah Osman became provisional president and the constitution was approved by referendum in 1961, though many northerners voted against it.

Rule and society

The republic was a multi-party parliamentary democracy, among the more open in Africa, but politics was dominated by clan rivalries and patronage. It pursued the goal of uniting all Somalis in a Greater Somalia, supporting insurgents in Kenya's Northern Frontier District, the Shifta War, and fighting a border war with Ethiopia in 1964. Abdirashid Ali Shermarke won the presidency in 1967.

Decline and legacy

On 15 October 1969 Shermarke was assassinated, and six days later the army under Mohamed Siad Barre seized power, dissolving parliament and creating the Somali Democratic Republic.
