Siad Barre

d. 1995 · 20th century · Also known as Mohamed Siad Barre

Siad Barre was a Somali army general who seized power in a coup on 21 October 1969, days after the assassination of President Abdirashid Ali Shermarke, and ruled the Somali Democratic Republic until 1991. He proclaimed scientific socialism and introduced a Latin script for Somali, but defeat in the Ogaden War against Ethiopia in 1977–1978 and clan-based repression led to civil war and his overthrow.
