Hargeisa
Hargeisa is the capital and largest city of Somaliland, the self-declared republic in north-western Somalia. It grew as a trading town and became the capital of British Somaliland in 1941. During the civil war, government forces under Siad Barre bombed it in 1988, killing thousands of Isaaq and destroying much of the city, which was rebuilt after Somaliland declared independence in 1991.
