Somali National Movement

1981–1991 · 20th century · Also known as SNM

The Somali National Movement was a rebel organisation founded in 1981, drawing mainly on the Isaaq clans of northern Somalia, to fight the regime of Siad Barre. The government's bombardment of Hargeisa in 1988 killed many civilians. After Barre's fall the movement declared the independence of the Republic of Somaliland in May 1991.
