Somali Civil War

1991–present · 20th century

The Somali Civil War is the armed conflict in Somalia that grew out of resistance to the military regime of Siad Barre in the 1980s and became general after his overthrow in 1991. Clan militias, foreign interventions, including the UN operations of 1992–1995 and Ethiopian forces, and later the Islamist group al-Shabaab have fought over a country that lacked an effective central government for much of the period.
