Northern Europe
Northern Europe is the region comprising Scandinavia, the Baltic lands and neighbouring areas. In the early medieval period it was connected to the Islamic world by trade routes running along the Volga. The Khazar Khaganate helped channel silver dirhams northwards, which became a cornerstone of Viking commerce.
