Sarkel
Sarkel was a fortress and town on the lower Don River, built for the Khazars in the ninth century with Byzantine assistance. It served as a defensive stronghold and a centre of trade and administration. Accounts of the Khazar Khaganate note that Sarkel reflected the khaganate's growing emphasis on defence, and it was captured during the campaigns of Sviatoslav I of Kiev.
