Sarmatia
Sarmatia was the name used by Greek and Roman geographers for the lands of the Sarmatians, roughly the steppes between the Vistula, the Volga and the Caucasus. Ptolemy's Geography divided it at the Don into European and Asian Sarmatia. The name survived in learned usage, and early modern Polish writers applied it to Poland-Lithuania, giving rise to the noble ideology of Sarmatism.
