Reginald Dyer

1864–1927 · 20th century · Also known as Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer

Reginald Dyer was a British Indian Army officer who ordered the Jallianwala Bagh massacre at Amritsar on 13 April 1919. Without warning, his troops fired on an unarmed crowd gathered in an enclosed garden, killing at least 379 people by official figures and probably many more. An official inquiry condemned his actions and he was forced to resign, but he was praised by many in Britain, and the massacre turned Indian opinion against British rule.
