Imphal
Imphal is the capital of the state of Manipur in north-eastern India, set in a fertile valley ringed by hills. It was the seat of the Meitei kings of Manipur, whose Kangla fort stands at its centre. In 1944 the Japanese offensive against Imphal, joined by the Indian National Army, was defeated in one of the decisive battles of the Burma campaign.
