1927–2009 · 20th century

Raúl Alfonsín was an Argentine lawyer and Radical Civic Union politician who served as president from 1983 to 1989, the first elected after the military dictatorship. He set up a commission to investigate the disappeared and allowed the trial of the juntas in 1985. Hyperinflation and military unrest marked his later years, and he handed over power early to Carlos Menem in 1989.
