Ernesto Cardenal

1925–2020 · 20th century

Ernesto Cardenal was a Nicaraguan poet and Catholic priest, a leading figure of liberation theology in Latin America. He founded a Christian community on the Solentiname islands in Lake Nicaragua and supported the Sandinista revolution, serving as minister of culture from 1979 to 1987; Pope John Paul II publicly rebuked him in 1983. His poetry, including Hora 0 and the Salmos, made him one of the best-known Latin American poets of his time.
