Contras

1980s · 20th century

The Contras were right-wing rebel groups that fought the Sandinista government of Nicaragua in the 1980s. Formed largely around former members of Anastasio Somoza's National Guard, they were armed, trained and funded by the United States and operated from camps in Honduras. Their war cost tens of thousands of lives, and secret US funding of the Contras led to the Iran–Contra affair.
