Ernesto Geisel

1907–1996 · 20th century

Ernesto Geisel was a Brazilian army general who served as president from 1974 to 1979, the fourth of the military dictatorship. He began a slow, controlled political opening, the distensão, eased censorship and in 1978 revoked the repressive Institutional Act Number Five. He pursued state-led industrial projects and nuclear power. He chose João Figueiredo as his successor, who completed the move back towards civilian rule.
