João Goulart

1919–1976 · 20th century · Also known as Jango

João Goulart was a Brazilian labour politician who became president in 1961 after Jânio Quadros resigned, accepted by the military only under a temporary parliamentary system. His proposals for land reform and ties to the left alarmed the military, the middle classes and the United States. He was overthrown by the coup of 1964 and died in exile.
