João Maria Ferreira do Amaral

1803–1849 · 19th century

João Maria Ferreira do Amaral was a Portuguese naval officer and governor of Macau from 1846 to 1849. He imposed taxes on the Chinese population, expelled the Chinese customs officials and stopped paying ground rent to China, turning Macau into a fully Portuguese colony. He was assassinated near the border gate in August 1849; China formally recognised Portuguese rule in the treaty of 1887.
