Jânio Quadros

1917–1992 · 20th century

Jânio Quadros was a Brazilian politician who rose rapidly from mayor to governor of São Paulo campaigning against corruption, with a broom as his symbol. He won the presidential election of 1960 by a large margin, but after an erratic seven months in office, marked by an independent foreign policy, he resigned unexpectedly on 25 August 1961. The resignation provoked a crisis over the succession of his vice-president, João Goulart.
