São Paulo
São Paulo is a region of south-eastern Brazil, now a state, centred on the city of the same name. In the nineteenth century it became the heart of Brazil's booming coffee economy. The São Paulo landowning elite increasingly supported the Republican Party, contributing to the fall of the monarchy in 1889.
