Coffee economy

Also known as coffee

Coffee is a drink made from the roasted seeds of the coffee plant, originally from Ethiopia and Yemen, which spread through the Islamic world and then Europe. Coffee became the dominant export of the Brazilian Empire, cultivated by enslaved labour, and a plantation crop in French colonies. It was also traded through the Persian Gulf under the Zand Empire, and Vienna's coffee houses were centres of intellectual life in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
