Lake Nicaragua
Lake Nicaragua is the largest lake in Central America, connected to the Caribbean by the San Juan River. Before the Spanish conquest the Nahua-speaking Nicarao lived on the isthmus of Rivas between the lake and the Pacific. In colonial and early independent times Granada, on its north-western shore, traded through the lake and the river, and the route was long considered for an interoceanic canal.
