Accessory Transit Company

1851–1856 · 19th century

The Accessory Transit Company was an American firm founded by Cornelius Vanderbilt that from 1851 carried travellers bound for California across Nicaragua, by steamboat up the San Juan River and across Lake Nicaragua, then by stagecoach to the Pacific port of San Juan del Sur. The route was shorter than the crossing at Panama and carried tens of thousands of passengers. In 1856 William Walker revoked its charter, and the route never fully recovered.
