Matagalpa
Matagalpa is a city in the central highlands of Nicaragua and capital of the department of the same name, at the heart of the country's main coffee-growing region. Coffee spread there from the 1870s, encouraged by laws that transferred indigenous communal land to private owners and by grants to European settlers. These pressures provoked an indigenous revolt in 1881, which was suppressed by the government.
