Accademia della Crusca

1583 · 16th century

The Accademia della Crusca is a Florentine academy founded in the early 1580s to study and preserve the Italian language. Its name, meaning 'bran', refers to sifting good language from bad. In 1612 it published the Vocabolario degli Accademici della Crusca, the first great dictionary of Italian, which took the Florentine of Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio as its model and set a standard for literary Italian. It remains a leading authority on the language.
