The Accademia del Cimento was a scientific society founded in Florence in 1657 by Grand Duke Ferdinando II and his brother Leopoldo de' Medici, followers of Galileo. One of the first academies devoted to experiment, it carried out tests on air pressure, heat, freezing and the speed of sound with standardised instruments, and published its results in the Saggi di naturali esperienze in 1667, the year it ceased to meet.
