Galileo Galilei
Galileo Galilei was an Italian astronomer, physicist and mathematician whose telescopic discoveries of 1609–1610, including the moons of Jupiter and the phases of Venus, supported the Copernican view of the solar system. Court mathematician to Grand Duke Cosimo II of Tuscany from 1610, he was tried by the Roman Inquisition in 1633 for his Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems and spent his last years under house arrest near Florence.
