Gezira Scheme

1925 · 20th century

The Gezira Scheme is a large irrigation project on the Gezira plain between the Blue and White Niles in Sudan, opened in 1925 when the Sennar Dam was completed. Run as a partnership between the government, a British company and tenant farmers, it grew cotton for export and became the backbone of the Sudanese economy. It remains one of the largest irrigation schemes in the world.
