Gezira
The Gezira ('island') is the fertile plain between the Blue Nile and the White Nile south of Khartoum in Sudan. It was a heartland of the Funj Sultanate of Sennar from the 16th century. Under Anglo-Egyptian rule the Gezira Scheme, opened in 1925 with the Sennar Dam, made it one of the world's largest irrigated cotton-growing areas, and it now forms Al Jazirah state.
