Khartoum
Khartoum is the capital of Sudan, at the meeting of the Blue and White Niles. It was founded as an Egyptian army camp in the 1820s and became the seat of the Turco-Egyptian administration of the Sudan. In January 1885 Mahdist forces took it and killed General Charles Gordon, after which the Mahdists ruled from Omdurman across the river. Rebuilt under the Anglo-Egyptian Condominium after 1898, it was badly damaged in the war that began in 2023.
